This is a guide to all the settings you should perform before starting to use MerchantOS.

[edit] Tax Setup

By default MerchantOS is set to charge 8.25% sales tax with no tax on labor.

[edit] Tax Rate

  1. Select the Admin menu option then select Sales Tax from the menu.
  2. By default you will have a tax rate setup called Local Sales Tax. Press on the pencil icon to the left of this tax rate.
  3. Set the Default Tax Rate field to your local tax rate. You can also rename the tax rate at this time.

[edit] Tax Classes

If you have any special circumstances for items which receive different tax rates from normal, you can use a tax class to set that up. For example your state my charge a lower tax rate for clothing than normal.

  1. From the menu select Admin then select Sales Class.
  2. Press the New Sales Class button. Name the class after the type of item that you want to have the special tax rules apply to. In the example above we would name the class clothing
  3. To set a rate for this class, select the Admin menu option then select Sales Tax from the menu.
  4. By default you will have a tax rate setup called Local Sales Tax. Press on the pencil icon to the left of this tax rate.
  5. To add in the class rate, select the class in the drop down menu, type in the rate, and press Add New Rate.
  6. For this rate to apply to an item on the register, make sure the item's class is set appropriately.

  1. To enable tax on labor, select Admin then Shop Settings from the menus.
  2. You will notice a check box labeled Tax Labor/Service. Check this box to enable tax on labor.
